I love fundraising. I love sharing an idea, a cause, or a candidate with a friend or colleague, causing them, in turn, to share in my enthusiasm. I love taking someone through my vision of how supporting a particular organization or person can positively change their life, family, community, and even their country. I might be a hopeless optimist, but I am passionate about making it simpler for someone to "raise their hand” – to do something- anything. I genuinely believe that participation creates a powerful antidote for apathy.
Anyone can write a check. It takes 30 seconds and all it requires is a moment of generosity. But to fundraise . . . to believe in something or someone enough to take the time to reach out to your own network – your family, your friends, your colleagues – and ask them to support your cause requires a whole lot more.
Fundraising can be rewarding, energizing and inspiring. Donating one’s time, one’s ideas and one’s passion serves us all. But for a volunteer, fundraising can also be overly time consuming, uncomfortable and even scary. Remember, the first time you got behind the wheel, put on skis, agreed to a blind date!
